Ringroot and the other demifolke leaders were not happy. First their female captive had mysteriously disappeared from a locked room, even though she should have been in a drugged stupor. Then the male had also escaped, taking the object known as the Crystallic with him.

"D'Honaire must have had the help of a powerful mage," the demifoxes' own (human) mage told them. "The pebbles would not be that difficult to prepare, but to get them to D'Honaire in his cell required advanced magic. So did transporting the female out of a locked room. From what we learnt from D'Honaire, by far the most likely candidate mage would seem to be Synizn. Though any mage would love to get his hands on the Crystallic, the dragoness Malachi might have magically been able to tip Synizn off that it was being brought to Walants, whereas no other mage should have been aware of its presence."

"We must find and destroy both the werebear and this Crystallic," Ringroot said. "The two werefoxes - or whatever they are - must die too, of course. It's a pity, since they were merely pawns, but it has to be done. But that is easier said than done. Synizn must have a dwelling somewhere in Walants, or at any rate not far away, but it is sure to be well hidden."

"As it happens, his possession of the Crystallic may help us to find him," Arkas said.
