The girl led them into the entrance from which she had just emerged. It was the only one that was at ground level, and seemed rather smaller than the others, though still several times their height. Fred noticed that there was a great stone door just inside, which could if necessary be used to close the entrance. If that was done, the dragons could still fly in and out through the higher entrances, but the village should be safe from human attack.

The tunnel that they were in sloped upwards. Fred guessed that it would lead them to the level of the first "step".

As they walked, Ken asked: "How many shifters live here?"

  1. The girl told them.
  2. The girl replied: "I do not know." But Fred thought that she sounded evasive. Perhaps the clan did not want its strength to be known? Astra frowned for a moment. Perhaps she had formed the same impression?
  3. "You will have to ask my father that," the girl replied.
