Sandra dived beneath the brigand's line of sight, keeping her eyes fixed on the crossbow.
Her blood rushed with elation as the battle began. She slid to the left just as he shot at her.
The slippery snow around her could be an advantage as well as a disadvantage, although
she would have to be careful. She had never fought in these conditions before. It took her
a few seconds to gain a purchase on the snow. She was well aware that she had to move
before the brigand put a new bolt in the crossbow. She shot up and grabbed the brigand's
burly arms, trying to grab the crossbow out of his hand. Grunting, the brigand tried to kick
her in the legs and pull her down, but she pulled back and kicked him hard in the crotch.
Her shin hurt, but the man winced with pain, and she pulled the crossbow out of his hands
and threw it into the snow. She grabbed her sword out with a satisfying "snikt" and cut the
brigand's head off.
The damned brigand was dead now, never to harm another innocent again. Sandra's brow was coated with now-cold sweat. Although she had trained her whole life for battle, this was only the second enemy she had ever killed. She was ashamed that she hesitated to look down at his head. However, once she did, she found that it was not dripping with blood. Rather, a tangle of metallic wires hung down from his neck. The brigand's eyes were flickering with an odd light.
