Astra put her hands on her hips and glowered at Rami. "You stupid girl!
You needn't eat orc yourself if you don't want to, but you have no right
to tell the rest of us what we can eat. Woman cannot live by bread alone -
or not the Dragon's bread, anyway, which is rather revolting. We
need meat to remain healthy, and orcmeat is all there is. You'll
come round to our way of thinking soon enough."
Rami obstinately stood her ground. Astra sighed. "I'm sorry that it has to be this way," she said. She marched over to Rami, picked her up as if she weighed no more than a feather and, ignoring the girl's struggles, carried her over to the furthest corner of the cavern and dumped her there. "Stay there," she said, "or next time I'll sit on you!" As Astra turned away, Rami heard a blood-curdling shriek, and guessed that one of the women's stone knives had found the orc's heart. She put her head in her hands and sobbed. Amy came over, sat down next to her and put her arm round her shoulder, but Rami pushed her away. Soon the aroma of stewing orc filled the air. Amy's mouth began to water. It smelled surprisingly good, and she felt very hungry, but would it be disloyal to her sister to have some? A tall, slim girl with dark hair and grey eyes walked over and spoke to her. "I'm sorry about your sister," she said. "Many of us felt that way at first, but living like this you can't avoid gradually becoming a little less human, a little more of an animal. My name's Exotica. I am - or rather I was - the daughter of the King of Allaria." "Hello, Exotica. I don't know what Rami and I are doing here in such company. We seem to be the only ones who are commoners." "Not quite. I'm sure that the Dragon has his reasons for who he chooses, but none of us understands how he thinks." "Why do none of you wear clothes? Surely you could use the skins of the orcs?" "The Dragon won't allow it. He wants to keep us in as primitive a state as possible, I think. He provides us with food and drink, a cauldron, a primitive oven, some wooden bowls and tin mugs, and the stone cutlery that you've seen. Apart from that, we don't have much else apart from the torches that are fixed to the walls to provide us with a little light." "What about washing facilities?" "There's a stream of cold water that runs through the corner of the cave. We bathe in that, but there's no soap. Orc fat is too rancid to use for that. And there's a hole in the floor over in the far corner where we can do our business. I use a stone fork to get the worst of the tangles out of my hair. I've thought of having it cut short, but cutting hair with a stone knife is no fun." "Are you confined to this cavern?"
