Ouch! Right in the Eye!

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 36642

Whistling a happy tune, with pep in his step, Baby Bear carried a scalding hot pot of stew to the cage in the living room. This was the last of the raptor - some thigh muscle mixed into a rich buttery broth of truffles and cheddar. It had been good eating all week, but the next would be even better - there was a certain sweetness to primate flesh that dry reptiles lacked.

The girl was sitting, cross-legged, in the cage, her hands hidden behind her back. There was a broad smile across her lips, which only made Baby Bear's day brighter.

"Hello there!" he sang out, "I've brought you some delicious and nutritious soup!"

"Well thank you," Amy exclaimed, raising her voice an octave, "and I have something just for you!"

Baby Bear became excited. He put the bowl down on a nearby table and jumped up and down in glee. "Oh! Oh! Oh! Give it to me! Give it to me!"

"Not yet, my little friend. First, you see, you'll have to solve a riddle..."

The bear would have none of this. He unlocked Amy's cage and reached in to grab whatever was hidden behind her back. She coyly slipped to the left and then the right, keeping out of Baby Bear's reach.

"Oh! Oh! Give it to me! Give it to me!"

Amy resettled herself, one leg in front of her, one tilted behind. "Here you go," she said, handing the bear an unusual little contraption. While he greedily grabbed it from her, she clutched the heavy anatomy textbook in both hands.

Baby Bear examined the object carefully. It was pretty - bright colors, with a happy smiling sun drawn on the side, and little green trees, and a couple of nice tiny W birds flying in the sky. A rainbow floated above it all, and a yellow face smiled up from the cap. Amy had busily drawn the scene on one of the notebook pages using her highlighters, and had then affixed it, using some of the moldy cheese from the sandwich, to the side of the plastic water bottle.

If Baby Bear had looked closer, he would have noticed that Amy had driven the sharpened end of a raptor claw (conveniently delivered in a raptor toe sandwich) into the neck of the bottle. If he'd looked closer at Amy, he would have found that her hair was hanging down below her neck; the rubber band she'd had it tied up with was gone.

Luckily for her, he didn't notice any of these things. Instead, he peered at the smiling face on the bottle cap. He shook the bottle a little, chuckled, and then raised it close to his face.

"This is Neat-O!" he said, "Nobody ever gives me a gift."

"That's not all," Amy smiled, "open the cap and look at what's inside."

Baby Bear gave her the expectant grin of a child on Christmas morning. With the bottle inches from the smile on his face, he unscrewed the cap ...

FOOSH!

Out fired the scissors, which had been tightly coiled with the tight rubberband on the raptor claw shaft! And these were no safety scissors. The sharp metal object lodged right into the bear's left eye!

He screamed, and Amy took advantage of the moment. With all the force she could muster, she slammed the textbook into the handle of the scissors, driving them deep into Baby Bear's orbital cavity. She didn't wait around to see the outcome. Within seconds, she was out of the cage and had slipped out the door of the creepy cottage in the cave.

  1. Amy disappears down one of the dark tunnels of the cave.
  2. Amy trips over a chain in the front yard of the cottage. The bears had chained up their large pet, and she looked neither happy nor friendly.
