The Doctor looked thoughtful for a long time, as if he was trying to
decide his next move. At first, Josh thought he was thinking up some
brilliant plan to get them out of trouble, but time passed, and he was
beginning to get irritated with the Doctor's idleness. "Hurry up!" he
shouted.
Eventually, a look came over the Doctor's face. Good, Josh thought, he's made up his mind. The Doctor shouted across the room, "I resign! Now I insist on some medical attention for my granddaughter." "WHAT?!" The other white players exclaimed in unison. "Why, grandfather?" asked Susan. "It's pointless to continue, we would lose our queen and the opponent would once more be on the attack. I doubt it would be wise to continue, Human Fred and Astra are Eternal Champions, so I'm not too worried for their safety, but if any of you were to be captured. . . I don't know what would happen. I don't want to put any of your lives at risk, you could all clearly see that in my strategy." "I was wondering about that" states Josh, "You seemed reluctant to sacrifice anything." "Yes, now," The Doctor turned to the other side of the board, "Whoever we've been facing, show yourself!"
