"I suppose you are right," Fred reluctantly conceded. "Reading the letter wouldn't really be the act of a gentleman. Besides, I imagine that it's very unlikely that it would be written in any language that I know."

His gaze went across the rows of chairs again, and he noticed a gleam of white on one of them. What he had seen was small, and contrasted little with the pale upholstery of the chairs, so it was not really surprising that he hadn't noticed it before. "I've found one of the missing pawns," he told Astra, pointing.

"Oh, yes. It seems the organiser has a strange sense of humour, to put a captured pawn on one of the chairs. In that case I imagine that our other captured pawns will also be on chairs."

When they looked closely at the chairs, they found that that was indeed the case.

Meanwhile:

  1. The Doctor had decided that there was no point in prolonging the game any longer, and called out: "I resign! Now I insist on some medical attention for my granddaughter."
  2. The Doctor made one of the three legal moves open to him.
  3. Rassilon...
