Because both the first and last passages might have taken them back
towards the underground river, and they wanted at all costs to avoid
having to cross it again, they quickly narrowed down their choice to the
exits on the far side of the cavern, namely the second and third. With
nothing to guide them, they eventually decided to take the second. (They
were numbering the passages in a clockwise fashion.)
As they left the cavern, Astra took one last look behind her at the statue. She thought that the only person who could possibly have created it, especially in the limited time available, was the Dragon. But what could the wyrm's motive have been? A lot of work must have been involved, even for so adept a mage, so surely the piece could not have been produced for no better reason than to puzzle and unsettle her? She put her musings behind her. She needed to have her wits about her, for this cave system would be a dangerous place even without the Dragon. The passage was wide enough for herself and Stacy to walk side by side. Though the walls glowed faintly, the light quickly grew dim as they left the cavern behind, and they had to proceed slowly for the first couple of minutes until their eyes adjusted.
