The hidden watchers realised after a while that they were not going to
catch all four of the strangers asleep at once, as they would have
preferred. But there were only four of them, and only two seemed to be
armed (Fred and Astra still had the swords that they had obtained over a
year ago [159-1]).
To Fred and Astra, it seemed that one moment the wood was deserted and the next they and their sleeping companions were surrounded by at least a dozen people, armed with a mixture of clubs, staves, spears, knives and bows. Fred and Astra were brave, but they weren't stupid. They knew that they had no chance against so many, so they threw down their swords and put up their hands in - they hoped - the universal gesture of surrender. "We mean you no harm," Fred said. "We arrived in your land by accident and are just passing through."
