Concealed Thoughts

"And that is what I became, in spite of such an auspicious beginning," Belboz said smoothly, belatedly aware that he had allowed himself to get a little carried away.

Both Fred and Checkers were thinking: "What a load of piffle", but were too polite to say so out loud. Apart from their natural politeness, however vain amd unpleasant Belboz might be, he had saved Fred's life. And Checkers' life too, most likely, when he had frightened away the Dragon. So whilst they - especially Checkers - felt increasingly unhappy with his character as more of it was revealed, they still felt in his debt.

Fortunately Belboz was unaware of their thoughts. He could not read someone's mind without their being made aware of it, and he did not want to tip off Fred and Checkers to his power in this regard.

And what was Astra thinking? Well, she was trying to avoid making any judgements on what Belboz had said. He might tune in to her thoughts at any time and, if he did not like them, then - given how vindictive and unpredictable he could be - the consequences might well be unpleasant. Not now, perhaps, when the presence of Fred and Checkers gave her at least a little protection. But she feared that there might come a time not too far off when she would be left alone with him again, as master and slave. That would be bad enough in any event, but she did not wish to risk making it even worse.

1. Belboz continues his story, trying to tone it down a little.
2. Belboz thinks that it would be wise to encourage Checkers or Fred to take over.
