Unfortunately the computer hardware and software on board the Astra had
proved to be incompatible with Russilinian technology, so my hope that I
could copy across the 3D star charts from the Astra had proved fruitless.
The Russilinians had good charts of their immediate neighbourhood, but
thanks to an inconveniently placed dust cloud they didn't have much beyond
that in the direction that I had wanted to go. So I didn't have any very
precise idea of where I was, only that with any luck it should be just
within Known Space.
I decided that I had better check out the (comparatively) local system that I had detected. The planets were unlikely to have any indigenous life; their sun was the wrong type and they were too far away from it. But an Earth colony on the surface of one of them, or aboard a space station orbiting one of them, was quite possible. So after a second, shorter, hyperlight trip, I dropped back to sub-light speed in the vicinity of the planet that had been nearer to the Phoenix. I was close enough now to search for signs of life on it.
