Forgiveness

"Thank you," Astra said to Fred, "but unlike your Allarian women I am quite capable of looking after myself. If someone insults me, then in future I shall decide on what the response should be, not you."

Fred did not know how to respond to this. Astra's attitude was something outside of his experience. The Allarian code of chivalry said that men should protect and revere women. However the women were expected to be properly grateful for that protection and weren't supposed to act independently of their menfolk.

To Fred's even greater surprise, she then held out her hand to the teen and helped him up. "You deserved that punch," she told him, "but I'm sure that you've learnt your lesson. I'm happy to let bygones be bygones. So, what's your name, and how do you come to be down here in the caves?"

1. The lad answered her questions.
2. The youth just goggled at her, too astonished to say anything.
