A Subtle Change

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 34617

Astra Dragon breathed fire gently on the block. Fred was standing back, to Astra's left, and after a minute, a drop of sweat rolled down his right arm to the elbow. He stood further back. He could feel a flow of warm air rising from the area where Astra heated the block. Astra now breathed in gasps, and then retreated from the block. Apparently this was hard work.

Fred slowly approached the block. He was somewhat concerned that the heat would mar the statue inside, but nothing had changed - the same beautiful young woman trapped in a yellowish block of something. He tapped it with his sword again, and there was no darkening this time. He tried to scratch it, hoping that it would cleave like melted butter, but there was a dull tap, and the block was still solid.

"The statue will come out of the block in its own good time," Astra said. "There are so my riddles about this place. The food appearing out of nowhere, the golden rope, which is so nice, and the strange ampitheater - I wish I knew how to change, so that I could see it myself. Perhaps there is someone who knows about the ways of the dragons who could help?"

Checkers had tied the obsidian spearpoint to the golden rope around Astra's neck. Checkers took advantage of the heat of the block to fuse the gold ring around the amulet to the rope. Astra wore the little object proudly. She was now calmer, and less prone to panic that she had been when first trapped in the alcove.

"It is a long way to anywhere," Fred noted. "And information on dragons is notoriously unreliable. But we could either leave the caves and search for that authority, or explore, and maybe find some information."

The trio agreed that Fred and Checkers should go through the passage to the ampitheater, and if possible, find a way out. Checker's diptych would serve to record where they went. Anything they found that was useful would be noted, and if possible brought back.

The knight and the Glider walked back past the market stalls. Fresh food had been made, Fred noted. When they came into the ampitheater, there was a small but noteworthy change. Both of them knew that a change was there, but neither could not quite fix what it was. Checkers looked at the globe, and Fred examined the statues.

Suddenly, they both knew where the change occured.

  1. It had taken place in the mosaic of the dragon in the ceiling. [22598]
  2. It had taken place in one of the statues. [22883, 33748]
  3. It had taken place on the great globe. [22929]
