Fred slowly made his way back, holding on to the cave wall for balance
and stepping carefully among the uneven ground. He had failed to break
the ice with his meager torch flame, and now his thoughts turned back to
his
friends and companions, Belboz and Ranma Saotome. What had become of
them? Perhaps if he found Belboz again he could ask him for a new torch,
or a spell to melt the ice, or a magic torch that never went out, or
maybe he could summon another great martial artist to be Fred's friend.
In any case, anything was better than this still maddening silence, for
Fred was at
heart a social creature, more at home among other people than immersed in
Thoreau-esque solitude. Suddenly Fred's torch went out. "Oh, curses!" Fred moaned. "Why did I only pack one torch? What am I to do now?"
