Fred and Astra yelled and ran with all their speed, jumping, leaping back
down the long tall trees. What foul trickery was this, what base curse
could so destroy a jungled forest with such speed and efficacy?
"It's the damned Master Voice!" cried out Fred, referring to the disembodied voice which cursed them to this jungle after they had dispatched the Dragon of the Southern Caves. "Run like the panther!" yelled Astra. "The goddess forbid we are wiped away even as these trees and vines!" And so the two heroes, the two who had completed their quest to kill the Dragon-Beast of the Shreken yet who had been wisked away by some evil Voice which claimed to be the Dragon's master, these two fighters ran for dear life. Entire trees were fading out of exsistence as the bewildered duo ran and jumped, trying to make their way to the bottom, to the jungle floor where they would continue to run, run away from the terrible magick that was taking out the life of this place. In the midst of their mad dash a bright glow appeared below them, they had little time to concentrate upon it. If they had, perhaps they would have noticed a figure step out from that light, a figure with a crossbow and quiver of bolts. The stranger seemed unperturbed by the fading plant-life, the figure simply aimed the weapon and fired with great precision. The bolt flew through the moist air like some kind of obscene animal - and it found its mark in the breast of Princess Astra. She screamed as the tip of lead and shaft of wood penetrated her flesh and muscle, forcing its way, digging its way between rib and tissue and puncturing her pumping heart. Astra screamed and then fell, she fell the ten feet that remained between her and the jungle floor. She had been so close to reaching her destination, but her fate had been faster than her feet. "NO!" growled Fred and he charged the hooded killer, but then a blinding glow enveloped the murderer, Fred staggered, then the light was gone and with it the deadly crossbowman. Fred was alone with Astra's corpse, but the jungle was still disappearing.
