Music from some invisible orchestra filled the ballroom. To Fred's
surprise, Astra suddenly dropped her bo staff, threw her arms around him,
and manoeuvred him onto the dance-floor. "No, Astra," he said, concerned
both about the propriety of dancing with a naked woman and the fact that
she was leading.
But Astra did not answer, and there seemed to be a glazed look in her eye as if she was in a trance. He felt her breath warm on his cheek. He tried to break free, but all that happened was that she held him yet tighter. She was a very strong woman, he knew, but now she seemed stronger still. Then he noticed that they were no longer alone. There was a host of other couples on the floor, clad in the fashions of a bygone age. Where had they all come from? But then he realised that they were totally silent. The only noise came from the invisible orchestra and from his and Astra's feet. No human beings could be that silent. They must be ghosts, perhaps re-enacting some dance held here long ago.
