Their clothes hadn't gone very far before getting snagged up on the bank.
Laughing at the absurdity of having just taken part in a clothes chase,
Fred and Astra got dressed. The clothes were sopping wet, of course, but
in this hot climate that hardly mattered. In fact it made them feel cooler.
Their attempts to clean their clothes hadn't been very successful, any more than their previous efforts back on the island had been. Most of the "new" dirt from the last twenty-four hours had gone, but the deeply ingrained grime, that made what had once been white material into grey, remained. Washing things in cold water with no soap wasn't very effective. Beating them with stones or brushing them with twigs helped a little, but could only be done very gently to minimise the wearing effect on the already thin and ragged garments. "This shift is going to totally disintegrate before too much longer," Astra said ruefully. "Still, unless we can manage to find civilisation I suppose it hardly matters." "So how are we going to find that civilisation? Should we follow the stream? We've no idea where it will take us, but at least it will mean that we won't just wander round in circles. And it might well eventually bring us to the sea, which would help in working out where we are and also increase the chances of our finding a settlement."
