Honesty is one of the Better Policies

As incredible as it sounded, Fred felt that the best thing to do would be to tell the centaur the truth about the Snark. Although nothing that he had said so far was a lie that could not be explained, Fred felt he was pushing things. Fred did not feel comfortable with deception, and if needs be he would fight his way out of the situation if the centaur reacted badly. But it might not come to that.

Lord Fred declared, "The lady is in debt to a certain creature called the Snark. The Snark is incredibly ugly - those that see its face are said to be scarred for life. Her obligation is to bring Horace back to him. It sounds incredible, I know. I do not know whether the Snark is still alive or not, but it does not matter. Through a magical agent, she is to find Horace, take him back in time, and deliver him to the Snark."

Fred had moved his hand to the grip of his weapon, and looked into the centaur's eyes. The centaur reacted.

1. He smiled. "That is one of the best traveler's stories that I have heard in a while. I owe you one, Lord Incognito. Please sit and listen to one of my tales, which you will find equally incredible."
2. He shook his head. "This does not sound truthful. But there is a way of testing it. What was the device that would allow Astra to travel back in time?"
3. The centaur nodded his head. "Thank you for being honest. That explains a few things that have bothered me about this whole affair."
