"...As for the information about the lady," Fred said, "she is of royal
blood, from a land far from here. This could be very profitable for your
masters in they have the right go-between."
Fred suspected that the men had not believed Astra's claim to be a servant. However plainly she had dressed, her proud bearing was liable to give her away. So he decided on a story that would contain a big enough element of the truth to be plausible, whilst recognising that he was taking a big risk. Hartley looked at Fred for a long moment, apparently trying to infer something from his facial expression. Then he said: "The right go-between being you, I take it?" "For say twenty-five per cent of any... let's say 'proceeds', yes." "Why did you follow her here?" "I've been stalking her from a long time, waiting for the right moment. Now your masters have presented me with an ideal opportunity." "Hmm. But why should they need you?" "Because only I know where she is from, and how to get to her family. Your masters will need me if they are to open negotiations with them." "Pehaps she would be from the Havnheim too? So what was her interest in Horace? And how did you find out about him and that he was the reason that she came here?" "As to your last question, the lady was less than discreet when she talked to your masters in the inn. I was sitting at a nearby table and was able to overhear what was said. As to why she was interested in Horace..."
