That morning, Fred woke up. He shook off his drowsiness, and got up. The
demon worm was gone. He was alone now. He stared into the hole the demon worm had made. He felt a sense of sadness, a sense of loss. The Princess was no more. He still felt pained with grief about her death. It wasn't just that she had died--everyone dies eventually--it was just that she had died so meaninglessly. Cut down in the prime of her life by that--that-- that thing. That was no death for a warrior, especially one so noble and brave as Astra. He had not known her very long, but he had known her compassion, her bravery, her loyalty. It was a shame he couldn't have known her longer. Perhaps they could have become friends. Or more. But there was no point crying over what was dead and dust. There was nothing he could do to bring her back. All he could do was to hope that she was happy in heaven. He kneeled down for about an hour and prayed for her soul. Then, he got up. He would continue on the route he had gone, and move for civilization. Once he was safe out of the desert, he would head for Aqualaria to inform its Queen that Astra was dead. All day, Fred walked, lonely and saddened. He wished there was someone he could talk to to releive the ennui of the journey and the pain of Astra's death. But there was no one. He was alone now.
