"Loneliness can't be all bad," Scott Hodges told himself for the millionth
time.* In the past several years, he had developed a habit of lecturing
himself out loud. "I'm just new to it. I bet this would be fun if I'd been
an only child." He began to pace again, still feeling lonely. He didn't understand the comfortable violet sofas lining this room, or the boxed food in the corner, or the strangely accessible spiral staircase plunging through the ceiling and floor. He'd wondered a couple of thousand times what he was doing here...but who was counting? (*) Actually it was only the 978,694th time, but he wasn't keeping a close count. Scott sighed, shook his head, and... Josh Burbank made his way up the stairs. He'd been running all day, and he was on the brink of collapse, but he still had that nagging feeling in the back of his mind that if he kept going, he would find something. Finally, he made his way up the stairs into this new staircase room. Aside from the completely different color scheme, it was identical to the one he had just left. "Who are you?" asks Hodges. "I-I was gonna ask you the same thing!" gasped Josh as he struggled to catch his breath.
