Lord Fred crouched in a gulley. He had hid his horse in a grove about a two hundred paces back. Astra had joined these men, and he had followed discretely, just out of sight. He had had a nervous moment when those two fat goats started bleating, but the crusts of old bread that he had stowed quieted them down. Nothing was happening. Fred looked at the overcast sky in frustration, as he had no way of telling the passage of time. Was he just nervous, or did it seem like Astra had been in there longer than she should? How long should this transaction take? Had Astra or the men left by another way? Surely he would have heard something. The only thing that he could hear was the shrill chirp of the grasshopper and, from time to time, a whinney from the stable. Lord Fred determined a plan that he would follow. He would
