Wake-up Call for a Centaur

"Whatever for?" Fat Jack asked. "You're not buying him for his conversational skills."

Perhaps Fat Jack had been sobered up by the walk to the barn, Astra thought. He had managed to say "conversational skills" without stumbling over or slurring the words. What should she tell him? The real reason for waking the centaur up was so that she could ask him his name (and if she got the right response then slip the bracelet on him), but saying that might sound suspicious.

"I could get some idea of his temperament from talking to him," she said. "If he's going to make a good racer, he has to have the right temperament."

"Very well," Fat Jack said. He unlatched the door of the stall.

1. Astra walked in, and gently slapped the centaur's side to wake him.
2. Astra began to walk in. She had taken two steps when something heavy hit her hard on the back of the head. Everything went black.
