Lacking anything better to do and hoping that, even if he couldn't rescue

Fred went with the police officers. Velus attempted to come with him, but
was given a firm swat on the behind and told to "Stay!" when he attempted
to climb into the strange conveyance with Fred. Fred gave him an
apologetic look and said, "Maybe you'd better stay here, Velus, in case
anyone else turns up." Fred was quickly taken to another part of the town and into an official- looking building, where he was led into a chilly room. "Now," said one of the men who had brought him here, "We've got a body here we want to see if you can identify. This may be a bit of a shock, so prepare yourself. Ready?" Fred nodded, and the man slid a drawer out of the wall. A drawer on which lay a dead body. Fred's own body. Fred couldn't help it. He screamed. The officer patted him sympathetically on the shoulder. "Twin brother?" he asked. "If it's any consolation, it must have been very quick. He didn't suffer." Fred had no idea how to respond to that. He couldn't bear the sight of himself lying cold and dead (and kind of mangled) on a slab, but he couldn't bring himself to look away, either. As he stared, however, something else finally caught his attention. There, tucked under the corpse's arm, was a towel. And, as Fred looked at it, he started to get exactly the kind of tingly feeling he'd thought the magic towel might give him...
