Astra did not trust Turik, which was why she had grilled him rather more
than was really
polite. She did not believe all of his answers, and she was in little
doubt that he knew that
she was the disappearing fortune teller. After all, who else would be
wearing a leotard? But
how could he have heard about her disappearance so quickly, when she had
only left a
matter of hours ago? She had little idea of what an "information
syndicate" might be, but
whatever it was it must be operating an efficient network of informants.
But for all that, she accepted his offer. Riding would be much quicker than walking. Much easier on the feet too, when you weren't wearing boots or shoes. (The expedition to explore the underground remains of Ilios sounded intriguing but, though it appealed to her sense of adventure, she knew that she had already been away from home for too long.) She was confident enough that she could deal with Turik and his driver should they try to threaten her. So she said "Yes, thank you" in reply to Turik's offer. He opened the door of the coach, and she put a foot on the running-board and in one graceful movement swung herself aboard, remembering to duck so that she did not hit her head on the way in. She sat down opposite Turik. "So how long before we reach Eramni?" she asked, pleased to see that his eyes had widened slightly in surprise at her display of athleticism.
