Astra had only four gold pieces remaining, having left five for Bertha as
per their agreement
and been forced to pay for her leotard with another. Ideally she would
have liked to equip
herself properly for travelling. She desired more suitable clothing, a
sword or at least a
dagger, and a backpack well stocked with supplies. But she could afford
none of those
things. Not having had the chance to learn too much about prices in
Daelin, she wasn't
even sure whether she had enough money to pay for food and lodging for the
night in a
wayside inn. She had slept under the stars often enough before, and if
necessary could do
so again, but she knew that travelling on foot meant that she would need
to eat properly.
She had not gone far along the trail, when a light coach drawn by a pair of horses overtook her. Then the occupant, a nobleman or rich merchant by the look of him, put his head out of the window and called up to his driver to bring the coach to a halt. Once it had stopped, he called back to Astra: "It seems that we are headed in the same direction. May I offer you a lift?"
