Astra's Theory

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 31245

Fred was beginning to wonder about Astra's sanity, though of course he was too polite to say so. Instead he went on: "Almost the only thing that is correct is that our king is indeed named Emry and he is a decent man. But his only child is his daughter, who is called Phaedra rather than Exotica. The realm is peaceful, apart from the dragon's raids, and the noble houses get along well with each other. We have no parliament, but a High Council of nobles advises the king. I've never heard of anyone called Zular. Our technology is fully the equal of Hespan's. We have no wizards, nor have done for several generations; magic is viewed as dangerous and evil. Our bards and our winemakers are skilled, it is true, but I've never heard of anywhere called Vjorica."

Astra frowned in thought. "Assuming that neither of us is deluded - and I know I'm not and I don't think you are - then I can only think of one possible explanation for the disparity in our memories, farfetched though it seems."

"Which is?"

"One of our Aqualarian philosophers came up with an intriguing idea a few years ago. She suggested that the reality that we knew might not be the only one, and that there might be a multitude of them which differed from our own in minor or even major respects. I think that when I sneezed and distracted Dr Vincent, I must have been transported not just to a different location but to a different reality."

  1. Fred concedes that this might be possible.
  2. "But that's nonsense!" Fred exclaims.
  3. "Er, that's very interesting," Fred says politely, now almost convinced that Astra must be insane and could be dangerous.
