Checkers was a little dubious about Belboz's suggestion, as a Glider
having little faith in supposedly magical devices such as wards. Still,
after all that Belboz had done in saving Fred's life it did not seem
courteous to object. "Very well," she said, "but I think that Astra and I
should take turns to keep watch whilst you are gone."
"By all means," Belboz said. He sent to Astra: I hardly need remind you of your vow, Princess. Whilst I am gone, your service to me will require that you do not tell Checkers of my true nature - or Fred if he should happen to wake before I return. Nor of course will you tell either of them anything that would contradict anything that I have told them. I understand, Astra responded. I will do what my honour and that of my house demands. So Belboz left, to get some much-needed sleep in his dragon form. Meanwhile Astra and Checkers agreed that Astra would take the first watch. Checkers seemed in no great hurry to settle down ready for sleep though, so Astra thought it might be pleasant to talk to her for a while, now that she herself was no longer literally speechless.
