The whole unit of nearly sixty men on horses charged after Albert.
Albert, who had nothing to lose, rode boldly through the darkness. He
knew his way about in daylight and could avoid the soft areas and other
hazards a forest at night presented to a galloping rider. Those chasing
him had no idea where they were or where they were going. Most could not
see Albert. After thirty seconds, the first horseman fell victim to a
dead end in the trees. Soon after, a rider hit a low branch. Then a
horse came upon a small swamp. Another horse triped on branches and
collasped. Those after these horses were likely to become entangled in
the growing mess of horse meat and thrown riders. More became lost in the
pitch black woods. With all the shouting and neighing, some troopers
didn't know which way to go. Still, some managed to come through and pursue Albert. As he hit the edge of the woods, he turned and saw three riders behind him, all riding hard. He pulled the lance from the sling in which it was kept on the horse and turned to face his adversaries. He chose the one to the far left and charged, expertly stabbing the horse below the neck. The rider came down hard and rolled. Albert drew his sabre. Another rider came upon him and thrust his lance forward. Albert parried the blow with his sword and gave the man an uppercut with his fist, knocking him on his back. The third rider turned and fled. Albert looked down at the man he just knocked off his horse. It was the lieutenant. "You ok, there?" asked Albert courteously. "Kill me now, you bastard." "Nay, but I would not kill a warrior of Allaria unless necessity demanded it of me. You fought well. Go in peace." With that, Albert spurred his horse to the west.
