Maculay invited Andrea in his small cottage for dinner. It was a
remarkable cottage, considering it was in the middle of nowhere. Maculay
couldn't remember whose it was or from where it came, only that it wasn't
his and now was here. He showed her the whole house, save the library and
laboratory which were, "strictly off limits, young lady." After finishing dinner of porridge, which was by all accounts, unappealing, lacking flavor and altogether unappetizing, they heard a horse gallop up to the door. "Ah, so there's that horse," said Maculay, rising. Someone was soon heard pounding on the door. Maculay went to answer it. At the door was a young man in a terrible sweat. "Good sire, have you seen Lady Andrea?" "I am Andrea," replied Andrea, stepping from the shadows. "Lady Andrea! I have found thee!" cried the lad, kneeling and averting his eyes from her presence. "Well, we know who I am, who are you?" asked Andrea. "I am Jim. I help with the kitchen at Croix Keep." Jim winced knowing that his rehearsed line didn't come out right. "Come my Lady, we must get you from here." "Why?" asked Andrea. "Is there trouble?" "Trouble? Trouble? Yes. Great trouble. Agnew the Slim has hired someone to kill you." Andrea laughed. "Kill me? What for? He knows I'd have his head." Jim became more serious. "Upon my honor, I swear it. I heard Agnew the Slim give the giant Torrance Blood a gold piece to kill you, with promise of nineteen more." "So you heard, but did not see? Why should I believe that the one who keeps my books wants me dead?" "I heard them there," replied Jim, earnestly, "and I saw Torrance Blood at your carriage. He was clearly looking for you with the intention of doing you harm. If you like, he will probably be here shortly on his steed, and you may ask him yourself."
