Andrea recognized the threat Albert posed not only to her father and
brother, but to her own offspring. As soon as she saw that Albert was
asleep, she took her things and darted away. She hid her pack at the
corner of the path and the road so as to travel more lightly, then ran
south as quickly as she could. After traveling much of the night, she came upon an encampment of lancers. An unseen guard acosted her at the edge of camp. "State thy name and purpose." "I am Lady Andrea of Croix Keep. Raise thy commander that I might see him." When she received no reply she strode forward to the sentry, who held her at pike's lenth. Soon they were joined by a half-dressed junior officer. "Who, pretell, are you?" he inquired. "As I informed your subaltern, I am Lady Andrea. I remain so now." The junior officer led her through the sleeping campto where the senior officer slept. There must have been sixty men with horses. The men had no tents, but slept on bare ground. "Sire," becockened the lieutenant, "she claims to be Lady Andrea." The captain rubbed the sleep from his eyes. "And so she is," he said, kneeling. "What service do you command me?" "Round thy troop and follow me. We capture Albert de' Lyon tonight." At the behest of a bugle, the men rose, dressed, mounted and rode back toward the small cabin, Lady Andrea in the lead. When they came upon Albert's abode, they split into two groups and surrounded the cabin. Some troopers prepared torches in order to fire the cabin at notice.
