Even before Fred could make any decision, even before Fred could ponder
the fact that Velus (who was transformed into a dog) could only
bark like a dog while these geese were speaking Common as if they were
human,
even before Fred could find the source of a stink that was beginning to
get the
better of him, he heard a scrapping sound. The animals reacted
immediately, they all ran to various parts of this holding-cave and
cowered!
Even before Fred could wonder at such a reaction, even before he could sensibly find a hiding place, even before he could discern whether he himself was the cause of the bad smell, something entered the cave. It shambled from out of a tunnel to Fred's left. It was big, real big, nearly twice the size of Fred. Its head was hairless but its face sported a deep blueish beard, and dense muscle corded its arms and legs. Upon its back it bore a hump, and a single pink eye set in the middle of its sloping forehead, but Fred noticed that nowhere did he see a mouth! When it saw Fred it stopped. It seemed to be pondering what manner of creature Fred was. Then it began wildly shaking its arms and ran right at him!
