Chester Resolves His Dilemma

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 29725

Lydia broke under the pressure. "Sire, my lady is in trouble. A man within our own gates, Agnew the Slim, has offered 20 gold to a beast of a man to kill her."

"This is preposterous," replied Chester rising from his chair. "How can you be certain of such rumors?"

"Sire, a lad in the kitchen, Milton, told me of their conversation."

Chester paused for effect. "And, what makes you believe him?"

"Well," explained Lydia, "he should have no reason to lie."

"Perhaps, perhaps you did what was right. From the magnitude of the risk, you were right to send warning. And I will do better. I will send the Queen's Guard to protect her. But, in the event the rumor is not true, you must not spread it. Plus, I do not want Agnew to hear of this and flee our gates. You understand? Instruct this Milton fellow also."

Lydia consented and left Grange's presence, breathing a quiet sigh of relief. Chester immediately called for the Captain of the Queen's Guard, who had duty to look after the security of the Princess.

Before they came, Chester paced the room. He had a dilemma to resolve. He had two options. He could tell the Captain that Andrea's life was in danger from Torrence Blood, knowing that they and Jim probably would not find her in time because they would not have the benefit of his agents, while Torrence would. If he did this, he would certainly have to liquidate Agnew before Agnew could speak. Agnew was not easily replaced. On the other hand, he could order the Captain to kill Jim. If he did this, he would have to kill Lydia and Milton, preferably by accident, and hope no one else knew would find out their story--especially the Guard. Milton was expendable, but Lydia, with her shapely hips and burning eyes, well . . . she made Chester's old frame creak with excitement. When the Captain arrived Chester ordered him:

  1. Hunt down Torrence Blood, kill him, and protect Andrea's life.
  2. Jim has taken one of the king's horses for a joy ride. This makes him a horse theif. Kill him on sight and bring his dead body back to the castle as an example.
