The large chamber is a rotunda, its curving wall capped by a high
dome. The wall
is what catches your eye at first. Although the room is not so well lit as
the passageway,
the flickering, smoky light of the sconces reveal a macabre and grim scene
of royal
majesty. Through the uncertain light you see that the wall is emblazoned
all round with
strange, noble figures in relief. You gaze at images of great men holding
rods of power
and authority, mobs of smaller figures bowing at their feet. And over
every great man is
cut an orb of might, while at his feet curls a flowing serpent. And below
the carved images
a strip of symbols curves along the length of the wall, symbols that are
strange and
unknown to you.
You find this place beautiful but forbidding. And you have not forgotten the unearthly chanting. It does not come from this room but from beyond the passageway directly across from you. Within the rotunda itself there are only the stone figures of the wall, the dusty flagstones of the ground and a rectangular pit cut into the center of the floor. You step into the room, edging closer to the pit but ever mindful of the second passageway and the singing beyond it. And then you see something that startles you, but fills you with some measure of hope. Sir Paulito's shield. It has been placed at the foot of the pit. 'So Paulito's grave was not just some sick joke,' you think. 'He is here, somewhere.' You hesitantly peer down into the pit, perhaps Sir Paulito has been trapped at its bottom.
