"Chaos energy?" said the boy. "You don't know what chaos energy is? Man,
you're retarded." The whole rest of the class (with the exception of a
few people--Ragan and Dayanara made a point of remembering who they were,
as they might be useful allies later on) laughed as if he had just made
the wittiest comment in the world. Ragan could see a group of girls
sitting together making nasty comments about them. KR, rather enraged by
now, reflected on the irony of someone who was probably failing all his
classes calling someone else a 'retard' (He'd never liked that word.) TW,
meanwhile, took out his sword menacingly. "You going to try to hack me up
into little pieces, faggot? I'm so fucking scared," said the boy.
"Hold it, hold it," said KR, placing his hand on TW. The latter flinched, and KR was not surprised--he would have reaced the same way if someone had done the same to him--but he didn't knwo what to do. "We need to be civilized here. We're human beings. Well, except for those of us who aren't but we're still civilized. We need to conduct civilized debate." "You're a faggot," said the boy. KR seriously wondered whether he shouldn't just kill this idiot and be done with it, but decided to just ignore him. "What the fuck is with your clothes, anyway?" "His clothes don't make him gay," said Ragan. "In the Middle Ages, that's what the manly men wore." "My brother and I are going to be part of MedSo--Medieval Society," said Time Warrior by way of explanation. "We dressed ourselves before school because it's very hard to get into and out of this stuff." "Oh, MedSo?" said the jerk. "Why can't you be part of a real fucking sport?" Ragan, a veteran SCA member, burst into derisive laughter. The jerk glared at her angrily. "You are going to attack an unarmed woman? I suppose that makes you such an honorable warrior," said Dayanara. "You shut up, bitch!" he yelled. "She's mad at you because you don't want to fuck her," said another jerk in the row behind him. Ragan noted that they looked exactly alike. "Oh really?" said Dayanara, her voice still level but clearly angry. "What would make you think I would be interested in you?" "Who isn't?" "I, for one, am not. Because you are a boorish idiot with no honor or dignity and you are ugly as well!" She clenched her fist threateningly. The whole class rang through with murmurs. "Oh yeah?" said the man. Now overcome with rage, he lunged at Dayanara, who Ragan now noted was wearing her original jumpsuit again and no longer hampered by her unwieldy winter clothing. Was this chaos energy, or just bad continuity? She was easily able to dodge the onrushing bully, and he was carried by his own momentum into the desk. He pulled himself up, clutching his head in pain. Now, the whole class was laughing at him. He looked at Dayanara with a glare that showed that this was far from over in his mind. "That was... kind of uncalled for," said Ragan. "But impressive." "Wow," said TW. "Maybe you could come visit my school once this mission is over? There's this one guy in my math class I'd like to introduce you to..." "Shh," said KR. "If the teacher finds out about this, we..." "Get a chance to rejoin the Doctor, wherever he is," said Ragan. "I think we might want the teacher to find out about it." Suddenly...
