On the Way to Detention

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 28715

"How are we going to get out of this one, huh?" said TW.

"Don't worry," said Ragan. "When hasn't the Doctor found some way to escape?"

"Yeah, well maybe there's a reason there haven't been any new TV episodes in four years!" said TW.

"I'm sure that's not because the Doctor died," said KR. "That's just typical TV exec stupidity. Although you never know. Now that we know that the Doctor is a real person, we could go back to our universe and try to market it as a reality show…"

"What's a reality show?" asked TW.

"You don't want to know," said KR.

"Sssssh!" said the hall monitor. "If you continue to speak so loudly, you will receive another 20 hours of detention!"

"Alright, fine," said TW, more quietly. "So should we try to knock him out?" he whispered to the Doctor.

"I'd rather we didn't start any fights. Not just yet. We should wait until we can start an effective resistance movement."

"Wait, you mean you're going to start an actual revolution?" said TW, a bit alarmed.

"Well, naturally," responded the Doctor.

"Doctor," said KR, "that's not a bad idea in principle, but you don't know what a mob of angry high school students is like."

"I'm afraid I do. They have secondary education on Gallifrey too, you know. If worse comes to worse, I'll simply have to rely on my natural charisma."

"Or on my hypnotism," put in the Master.

"I'd rather we didn't," said the Doctor. "We shouldn't have to rely on hocking up big gobs of slime at people."

"I'm relying more on my more traditional methods of hypnotism these days, Doctor. Mind control by expectoration is a bit undignified for me."

"If you're so concerned about being dignified, why are you wearing such ridiculous clothing?" The Master was wearing the same outfit he wore at the climax of the TV-Movie.

"Wait, you're criticizing my fashion sense? I must say…"

"Doctor, Master, please," said Ragan. She turned to Dayanara. "Now I'm curious. Do you have high schools on your world? And if not, did the Multiverse Patrol teach you anything about them?"

"We do not have general education as such in my world. Our careers are chosen for us at a very young age by the mind-mages and we are taught by apprenticeship, as the Atlans have done for centuries. We leave our homes at age 13 and assume our new careers at age 18. I would have originally been a mathematician before the Patrol recruited me. In fact," and now she seemed a bit more concerned, "I was chosen for my original mission because it required mathematical expertise, although it helped that I was now in a more physically strong form. But I am not skilled as a battle- mage."

"Wait," said KR, "did you say the Atlans? As in the inhabitants of Atlantis?"

"Yes, I did. It was the people of Atlantis of my universe who colonized my world. I was under the impression that most humans refer to us as Atlanteans."

"We do," said KR. "The only time I've ever seen that term was in an episode of an interactive story. Guess all things considered I shouldn't be too surprised about that. And now that I think about it, the… those aliens you referred to earlier, I remember writing about them in an episode of mine. So does that mean the Eternal Champions are real too?"

"Indeed they are, and we have allied with them a number of times, although not all on my world or within the Patrol are fond of them."

"Wait, what's an Eternal Champion?" asked Ragan. So KR explained. For ten minutes. By the time he was done, Ragan's head felt like it was about to explode. "And all that really happened?" she said. "Wow. You know, maybe this version of Game 2 is really a Torg cosm and Scott is its High Lord? That would explain why it seems to have incorporated this warped version of the Extend-A-Story world."

"What's Torg?" asked Dayanara, by now rather confused. Ragan was about to explain Torg (a rather daunting task because she would have had to explain the whole concept of roleplaying games as well) but before she could

  1. They reached... the Detention Block.
