Karen and Mark follow the river upstream. After several miles they come
across a small but very noisy waterfall. Though the cliff face looks
unclimbable at first, there is a narrow path with a very steep gradient.
They notice that the cliff seems to stretch to the horizon in both
directions, as does the pine tree forest. Being in a curious frame of mind
the pair attempt to climb the path to the top of the cliff. Mark goes
first, with Karen close behind. Despite the burden of the books, the path being slippery with moss and the two of them getting soaked by spray from the waterfall, they slowly but surely make their way to the top. There were several close calls before they finally got there, though. They can only stagger a few feet away from the cliff edge before they collapse with exhaustion. Around them appears to be a continuation of the pine forest, but there is also a number of other trees such as ash and elm. Over the roar of the waterfall, the pair of them can hear birds singing in the trees, though neither of them can work out what sort of birds they are. After having rested, they decide to continue to follow the river. They notice that the banks of the river seem to slowly get higher and higher, until the river bed is a good three metres below them. The banks also have a number of holes in them, as if some sort of creature has made their home there. Eventually they reach the foot of a mountain, and they notice the river flowing through a hole that is too small for them to venture through. They decide there is no way they are going to try and climb the mountain, but they didn't really want to go back the way they came. Before they could decide what to do, however, they were startled to see part of the mountainside swing open before them. What should they do?
