Cries in the Night

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 28498

The elder Adrian had actually been the first to wake up, mostly because he was highly restless after everything that had happened. After unsuccessfully trying to go back to sleep, he dragged himself out of bed, tired, aggravated, thirsty, and sore. Crickets chirped and an owl hooted, but it was impossible to hear them over Ragan's snoring. He had never pegged Ragan as quite that loud a snorer. However, he hadn't noticed while trying to sleep, probably because he'd been snoring just as loudly himself. His younger self was snoring incredibly loudly and tossing around, and generally looked like he was possessed. Dayanara, by contrast, seemed to be sleeping with unnatural peace. She looked like some kind of lovely sculpture, seeming to be barely even breathing. This was probably due to her Multiverse Patrol conditioning, Adrian decided--it wouldn't surprise him if they taught one how to sleep more efficiently. He could use some of that training. The Master was tossing around and muttering incoherently in his sleep. Adrian decided that he would probably rather not understand what he was saying. The Doctor, by contrast, seemed peaceful but was speaking with absolute clarity. In fact, he seemed to be reciting Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It wasn't entirely accurate--at some point, the albatross around the Ancient Mariner's neck seemed to have become an albacore--but still pretty impressive for someone in deep sleep.

Suddenly, however, the silence was broken by a sharp scream. It was Dayanara's scream, all the more disconcerting because of her earlier seeming calm. The others in the group shot awake, seeming very disoriented and confused. Adrian had the sense that he had to do something to help her but he didn't know quite what he should do. Maybe he'd be better able to handle this situation if he had more sleep. The Doctor, on the other hand, rushed to where Dayanara was and placed his arms around her. "Are you alright?" he asked.

"Yes," she said, sobbing. "Just a bad dream." It seemed to the elder Adrian that her face had lit up when she saw the Eighth Doctor. She was obviously quite taken with him, he thought with just a tinge of jealousy. What did women see in this incarnation of the Doctor, anyway? It was almost as bad as Legolas. Still, he felt kind of selfish for thinking such thoughts when she was clearly in great distress.

"What was it?" the Doctor asked her quietly.

"It was..." She seemed on the verge of telling him, then pulled back. "Nothing. It was nothing." She closed her eyes, seeming drained.

The Doctor got up and assumed a cheerful grin. "Well, now that we're all awake, how about a trip to the Dragon's caves?" Ragan shook her head, the Adrians groaned, and the Master shot forth a series of alien-sounding words whose meaning was probably not very pleasant. "I suppose not, then." Everyone resumed their places and drifted back to sleep. After a while, the Ragans started snoring again and the Doctor began to impassionedly recite something from Lord of the Rings. Dayanara went back to sleep instantly, or perhaps she was still awake but too drained to do anything. After far too long, the Adrians went back to sleep as well.

"Rise and shine," said the Doctor after what had felt like only a few seconds of sleep.

Ragan groaned and buried her face in the ground. Adrian reluctantly opened his eyes. It was dawn now. "We only had about an hour of sleep!" he shouted. "We can't do this!" He rolled his eyes. The Doctor was worse than his parents!

"Well, we are on a quest. We should complete this as soon as possible so we can save Ragan's earth. And I do have coffee."

"I can't save the world if I don't get more sleep," said Ragan stubbornly. But eventually, she realized that it was too light to go back to sleep. Why is it that all sci-fi heroes always get enough sleep on TV, anyway? she wondered.

"So how are we going to <yawn> tell me apart from my older self?" asked the younger Adrian.

"Well, we could use the internet aliases we used at these repsective points. You could be Time Warrior or TW and I could be Knight Random or KR. Although it does seem odd for someone to actually call me Knight Random in real life," said the elder Adrian.

"There's one important question no one has asked yet," said the Master. "What is the goal of this 'game' supposed to be?"

"Now that these new knights have arrived, I would assume it is to kill this Dragon they mentioned," said the Doctor. "Its caves are right over there."

"I remember the cave having two entrances, though," said TW. "And I had no idea which one leads to the Dragon."

"That's odd," said KR. "I remember the cave having four entrances."

"I think it changes every time you see it," said Ragan. "Probably just Addventure chaos."

The six heroes then set off to the Dragon's caves. When they got there, they found that

 1. the caves had two entrances, as Time Warrior remembered. [8902]
 2. the caves had four entrances, as Knight Random remembered. [9222]
 3. the caves were gone. They were now replaced by a flat, ugly building with several entrances that looked like an American high school.
