"But the breastplate's dirty from when you used it to fry fish," Khrusti objected. "I'd get congealed fish oil in my hair."

"Give me strength!" Fred said. "When you're dead, it's not going to matter if your hair is mussed up, surely? Anyway, she'll hit you with the outside, and the grease is on the inside."

"I'll rinse the breastplate in the ocean if it will make you happy," Astra offered.

"But Allaria hasn't practised human sacrifice for hundreds of years," Khrusti protested.

"And look at how badly things have been going," Fred pointed out. "If we'd only sacrificed a few virgins, then maybe we wouldn't have suffered the attacks from the Dragon. At the very least, it would have prevented him carrying off those virgins."

"You've made a very good point," Khrusti conceded. "Sacrificing an innocent maiden would be a far better idea." He looked pointedly at Astra.

"Before you get too excited," she said, "I should tell you that I'm neither innocent nor a maiden."
