Laying it on with a Trowel

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 28081

Fertal spoke, softly but clearly.

"It may be out of place for me, a junior to the more experienced, to say anything. However, I cannot hold my peace. Lord Fred, you do not know me, for I have no deeds to boast of. I am the least of the Dark Elves, whose ways are misunderstood by many. I hope to earn the confidence of my mentors, as well as of you."

All eyes turned toward him as he continued, "Lord Fred, the Kingdom of Allaria is looked upon with great respect by my kin. The deeds and actions of its warriors echo even to us, those who dwell in the farthest reaches of the Dark West, from whence we came." Belboz stroked his chin with his thumb and forefinger, as if in thought. Fred nodded seriously. Astra stared without blinking, her mouth slightly open. Checkers observed dispassionately, gauging the reactions of the assembled party. The reference to the Dark West had a sobering effect on everyone else, and gave the Dark Elf an unexpected stature.

Fertal observed this change. I am telling the truth, although greatly simplified, to the point of distortion; the literal truth is too complicated to explain. We did originate from the Razed Land. I hope that this is the right thing to say.

"Lord Fred, we know that you are of the House of D'Honaire, second only to the House of Exultine in power and renown in Aqualaria. I for one would be honoured to serve alongside such a great man, and to play my small part in what I hope will be an epic battle sung by generations hence."

"A very reasonable and well-mannered chap, with unusual insight," thought Fred. "He has a bright future in front of him."

Fertal continued, "Artizza and I have heard the rumours that you have been sent to face the dragon alone, but know not why. Allaria has might enough to send an army down to root the beast out. The dragon affects us to, although no one more cruelly that your people. It is only right, to me, that you should be in the van." Fertal turned toward his peers. "I have spoken sincerely, if maybe not wisely."

"What has been done, has been done," replied Tarin Gazin (2).

Fred responded, "There are reasons that I have been sent alone. There was a stranger, many years ago, who seemed fair-speaking, who accompanied the flower of the Havnheim on a great expedition to bring the dragon to justice. Ever since then, we have been wary of strangers, even those who seem fair. But speak, stranger. You are called by what name?"

"Fertal, sir."

"Ah, Fertal. Speak first. Speak for the Dark Elves. What do you know about this dragon? What do you know of his powers, and what account do you have of his weaknesses?"

  1. "In truth, Lord Fred, I know little, other than he is a dragon maturing into the fullness of his power."
  2. "I know a good deal, Lord Fred."
  3. "May I defer to a more experienced collegue?"
