Fred set the candle on the landing and ventured down the staircase. It
was very narrow and very long, but the voices became louder as he went.
The ladder seemed to be made of brass, an unusual metal for ladders. At
last he reached the bottom. This was some sort of wizard's laboratory.
An unholy light eminated from the ceiling and a very strangely dressed man
was clearly upset with the maid of Fred's apartment. Behind them, on a
long table, lay motionless a huge man, perhaps eight feet tall. Fred
knelt behind a desk with papers on it. "I told you," said the man firmly, and clearly trying not to yell, "I must have his seed. No other will do. He is the best of all knights in speed, strength and cunning. This creature, this man, you see, will have the best in wizardry, best in warriors, the best in administration, and the best in generals. I have three of these, now I need you to do the simple task of getting the best in warriors. Once I have succeeded, the Kells will rule the whole world behind my super king, and you will have your share in that glory and wealth. But, girl, fail me again, and I will find something more of his liking. Is that clear? Good." Fred watched as the wizard extended a fingernail--more of a claw--and touched the girl's white neck. Blood immediately flowed. The girl shrieked slightly in pain. The wizard then delicately tasted her blood on his nail as one would a fine chocolate. "Hmmm. But you must hurry, girl. Do your job well."
