A dreamy quiet lay over the jungle, then far back among the trees, a bird
lifted its song. A breeze whispered through the leaves and set them to
murmuring. Fred found himself listening intently. They began to walk
among the dense towers of vegetation and as Fred peered into the shadows
between the trees, something swept into the sunlight with a swift whirl of
wings: a great parrot - looking to be some three feet in length! It
dropped onto a leafy branch and swayed there, a gleaming image of jade and
crimson. It turned its head sidewise and regarded the strangers with
glittering eyes of jet.
"Qurom!" muttered Fred. "The Serpent-Beast of the Shreken was never known to be able to do such trickery and evil! To move a man from one place to another with nary a blink of its evil eye... we had never seen such a thing in Allaria before!" "What then did the Beast do to your people?" asked Amy. "Burned our fields, stole our children, munched on our virgins and chomped on our distilleries." "Distilleries?" asked Amy as if she did not know the meaning of the word. "Yes," said Fred. "Wierdest thing, too. My people would always find lemon rinds spread far and wide about the destroyed equipment and spilled beers and liquors." "Oh," said Amy, who knew a thing or two about liquor even if she didn't know about its manufacture. "Lemon and liquor go hand in hand as--" "--as boys and girls go bed to bed!" came an eerily strange voice; it sounded not quite human! Amy and Fred whireld about but all they saw was the over-grown parrot. The parrot was looking at them and then it screeched a horrible human-sounding laugh, lifted its well-muscled wings and took off with yet another screech: "Yag-soth loves tequila!" The two ran from that spot for some time, but even when they came to a stop they were still not out of the jungle. "What did it say?" asked Amy of Fred. "I'm not sure..." said Fred. "I've never heard the names Yag- soth or Tequila. Perhaps they are conjugal gods..."
