The Never Ending Quest - Episode 27672

And just as suddenly all was quiet once more. Fred, wasting no precious time at all, pointed an accusatory finger at Velus. "He did it! His name's Velus and he's an evil peasant boy! I'm really sorry, I told him not to do it - but he just started hacking away like a maniac!" He winked at Velus and motioned for him to play along.

"He made me do it!" buffeted the young commoner instead, eyeing the windy Lord of Suffex with mistrust and contempt. "I'm just an impressionable youth being exploited by this coniving, arrogant aristocrat - who, by the way, prefers the professional title of 'Dragon-Slayer'!"

And still, their pleas met only silence.

Fred cleared his throat.

Velus scratched under an armpit.

Fred blinked. "Well then!" And began furiously hacking away at the beast's heavily armoured neck. "My Quest is at an end. Maybe dragons aren't as tough as the rumors make them out to be," he said amoung the heavy breaths of his labor. "All I need to do now is get this pesky head back to the surface. If you help me in this endeavor, I'll be sure to toss a few coppers your way, or something...maybe."

Velus looked around the dark den uneasily, then peered at Fred with a haunted look in his eyes. "What about the disembodied voice?" he whispered worredly.

Fred shrugged. "How do you know it's disembodied, Velus!? Huh!? ANSWER ME! How!? It's dark as Hades down here! It's like assuming a roaring originating from within a tightly sealed box is a gorilla, when it could be a hippo or a tiger! Don't just make an assumption and accept it like a fact, Velus! And besides, if voices, embodied or disembodied, are the biggest obstacles we face on our departure from this vile pit, then this Quest will have been a walk in the park."

And that, for the most part, was that. Following the same path they had slaughtered their way through from last time, they made their way out of the caves with little to no resistance. Besides killing the dreaded dragon who had plagued the Great Kingdom for years, they had also rooted out a great deal of the evil things (and thinges) that had infested this part of the Shreken while on their way to confront the beast. A remarkable accomplishment.

Fred returned to a Hero's welcome in his homeland, and retired to a life of decadence and fame, while Velus returned to the squalors and died of malnutrition several years later, alone and cold in a gully somewhere. Nobody mourned his departure from this earth, and his stringy flesh wasn't even very good eating for the dogs and vultures.

THE END.

  1. Move it along. Nothing left here to see.
