Fred and Velus returned to the Caves with their new supplies. They found
the maiden chained to the wall and applied some of the powder, but except
for a fizzle nothing happened. "Darn!" said Fred. "We need that Wizard's
touch, but he's too chicken to come here while the Dragon still lives."
"Then I am doomed!" cried out the princess. "DOOMED!" "Hey there, Princess," said Velus. "We'll go and kill this here Dragon, just wait you and see." The princess rolled her eyes and said it again: "DOOMED!" Unperturbed by the maiden's lack of support the knight and the serf head out deeper into the Caves. The next three days they spend traversing corridors, jumping over lava flows, squeezing past strange cogs and logs and wheels that turn; they fight snakes, rats, kobolds and centaurs; they discover an entire underground world ruled by various sundry characters such as the Undead Mountain Gnome, the Ogre of the Fifth Degree, the Stalagmite Hag, and others. Finally, on the fourth day (and luckily for them for their foodstuffs were running out, as well as their store of butt- paper) they found themselves on a ledge overlooking yet another subterranean lake. In the middle of the lake was a strip of land. Resting on that strip was the Dragon. After looking around for a bit they discovered various fungal vines growing along one wall and they scaled the wall, going down towards the lake. Once on solid ground they quietly swam (really walked, for the lake was only three feet deep) to the "island" and the sleeping serpent. Once close enough, they ran forward and slammed their blades deep into the dragon's head. It growled once, shuddered, then died! Fred had finished his quest; Velus was human, sane, and still alive! "That was too easy." Lord Fred said. "I agree." said Velus. "Something isn't right about this." "A dragon this powerful, this evil was really this simple to defeat?" "Uh," said Velus. "What do you know about the dragon?" "It destroys fields, kidnaps people and wrecks buildings." "Usually in the dead of night, too." "And yet here all we have seen of the dragon is this sleeping serpent. By Crom, Crud, and Hud! Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Velus looked at Fred with a near-blank face but nodded anyway. "This may not be the true culprit to the devastation within Allaria!!!" What do our two heroes do now?
