Fred and Astra looked at each other. Though no words were exchanged
between them, they both came to the same conclusion: it would be foolish
not to accept the task, since it would get them safely away from this
place. Once that had been achieved, they need not feel bound to continue
with a task taken on under duress but would head for home.
"We'll do it," they said simultaneously. "So you can speak after all," the Monkey King said drily. "I'm glad that you've seen reason. To ensure that you will complete your task and will return here afterwards, you will be given a very slow-acting poison to which only we have the antidote. Without that antidote, it will kill you within three months. You'll start to notice the first effects after five or six weeks, so I advise you to complete your task as quickly as you can. Even if you fail, you should return here to be executed, since death from the poison will be slow and painful, and execution will be the preferable option." That put a very different complexion on things. Was the Monkey bluffing? Could a poison really be as slow acting as that?
