The journey had taken longer than Astra and Anina had hoped. The need to
divert around the Shreken and the Goth mountain ranges had added
substantially to the time. But at last they skirted the southernmost peak
of the Goth and knew that they were about to enter their homeland.
They were on a much-travelled road now, for most traffic between Aquilaria and the western lands came this way. The good quality of the road (by contemporary standards) was a blessing, for they still had to cross the whole width of Aquilaria before they would reach Themyscira, the capital. A much-travelled road it might be, but it seemed addly deserted now. They had seen nobody for several days. But not far ahead of them lay the substantial town of Yarengo, where they could catch up on the news and get themselves a pair of fast horses. (For though the people might not recognise Astra, no Aquilarian would deny the famed Anina whatever she needed.) Then a distant plume of smoke came into view. "That smoke seems to be rising from about where Yarengo should be," Astra said. "It's just a farmer burning off some scrub," Anina replied, more in hope than in conviction. They rode on.
