The moment Fred’s hand touched the door handle, he heard the sound of
glass shatter. He turned in the direction of the sound to see that a
window had been boarded with planks of wood, horizontally nailed and not
leaving even a tiny gap. Behind them were the sounds of footsteps, then
clashing metal, and finally saw sawing through wood.
They were expecting company Fred thought. Instinctively, he ran to the side of the writing desk while unsheathing his weapon, and leaned his back against the wall, sword ready to attack the intruder the instant he entered. Fred only had to wait for a minute before the head of a saw sipped out of the top of the wood on the side nearest to him. Although it appeared to be generic steel saw, it cut through the wood like it was simply a very thick book. Fred suspected magical aid. Within seconds, the saw reached the bottom and withdrew.*CRACK* *CRACK* *CRACK* *CRACK* *CRACK* *CRACK* Whoever was behind the boards was kicking at them with tremendous force, obviously attempting to split the boards in half. However, the boards were sturdy and unyielding: After a dozen or so more tries, the kicks ceased, and from behind the boards Fred heard heavy breathing. A moment later, the sawing resumed, this time from the top of the other side. Like before, it rapidly saw through the wood and the middles of boards clattered over the floor and window ceil.Fred stepped on top of the writing desk in front of the window and lunge his sword into man’s stomach. The sword cut through the man like butter. The man before him was dressed head to toe in black garbs, with only an opening for his eyes. And within this opening, the eyes themselves were gapped wide open, tears forming around them. Fred withdrew his sword and struck again, this time a slash across the head. The sword spit the man’s head in two like an axe on hollow wood. The man’s body was about to fall forward until Fred kicked it, sending it flying out the window. He heard the body wrestle through the tree before it hit hard ground.Several thoughts surged through Fred’s mind all at once: Where were the damn castle guards? Why was this man dressed so oddly? Why is my sword cutting through bone like it's nothing…? …and there might more coming.
