Rising late had meant that it was lunch-time for the locals when Astra and
Velus arrived at the local market. A man, already drunk, made a bad
mistake when he attempted to hit on Astra. "Hi, darlin'," he called
out, "would you like to come and have a drink with me? Then I could take
you home and show you my stuffed koala bear collection."
Astra spun round, and glared at the man. "Were you talking to me?" she asked menacingly. A sober man would have taken the hint, and claimed to have been talking to someone else. But this man was far from sober. "Sure was, Sheila," he said, with what was intended to be an ingratiating smile. (The people of Aussiebastards called all women "Sheila" regardless of what their names actually were.) The next thing the drunk knew, he was on the ground and nursing a jaw that might well be broken.
