ploys, mortal man!" Lava Man chuckled upon their much anticipated
departure from the vile underworld confines of the Kobold Principalities,
giving Fred a good natured nudge in his ribs. This gave him third degree
burns over a large portion of his torso, but he took it in stride. Lava
Man was a valuable ally in his quest to slay Minestus, and he did not
want to seem overly weak. "From here we must strike a course eastward," the molten creature explained, "further into the innards of the Shrekken. We will take a shortcut through the ruined dwarfin stronghold of GuldHelm, which markes the beginning of the Undead Gnome King's territory" Fred noticed how the strangely abundant phosphorescent lichen that had illuminated the entire cave network was absent now. He voiced his observations to Lava Man.Lava Man smiled knowingly. He delighted in showing off his knowledge of everything to any willing soul with an ear to lend. "Ah yes, we are now in a dry region of the caves, and the lichen cannot grow here. This is much to my liking. Quite ever canopied with fungi and uncouth, slimy growths is the entrance to these caves. I have not ventured this way in some time, but I remember the air being clean." "Will we meet resistance in the realm of the Undead Gnome King?""Undoubtebly. A little stiffer than what those kobolds put up, too. But it will not stymie our progress. Gnomes are clever tricksters, but they burn just as easily as any other race." The kobolds would have certainly overwhelmed Fred if it had not been for Lava Man, and he began to have doubts about his Quest. It would not be the first time.
