Astra and Checkers watched in silence, as the blood from the first bag
began slowly to reduce in amount as it flowed into Fred. "All we can do
for now is wait," Belboz said. "It will take some time for the contents of
all five bags to be given to him. I should warn you that whilst this
should remove the threat to his life, there is severe damage where the
attack was centred. That will mean that he will have at best only limited
use of his right arm, and any improvement is likely to take many months."
"But you're a skilled healer," Checkers pointed out. "Can't you do anything to help?" "I'm afraid that repairing his shoulder muscles is a little out of my league," Belboz said. That was not true, but just in case Fred should recover enough to pose a threat it would be better if he could not wield a sword effectively. Poor Fred, Astra thought. I know how much the right arm means to a warrior. I only promised that I would try to save his life, Belboz pointed out, not that I could make him as good as new. No trying to slide out of your vow, Princess. You need not concern yourself on that score, Belboz. I honour my debts. Belboz did not reply, but busied himself by replacing the first bag - now empty - with the second. By the time the third and final bag of Astra's blood had entered Fred's veins, his colour was beginning to look a little better, and he seemed to be breathing a little more easily. Then Belboz switched to the fourth bag, containing Checkers blood.
